Speed breakers are designed to make sure that people do not overspeed on roads. Mostly, they are located at junctions, around schools and hospitals, and other places where people regularly have to walk. Scientifically designed speed breakers help in reducing the number of accidents. However, unscientific speed breakers cause more damage than good. Recently, a video went viral in which a BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Fortuner, and other vehicles were seen flying off after hitting an unmarked speed breaker.
This video showing an unmarked speed breaker causing vehicles to fly off on a highway has been shared on YouTube. In this short clip, we can first note a white-colored BMW 5-Series getting airborne after driving over an unmarked speed breaker. After the vehicle landed on the other side, there were sparks flying out of its lower body.

Just after this, we see a Maruti Suzuki Brezza flying off, and it was then followed by a Mercedes-Benz C-Class doing the same. This particular unmarked speed breaker also made a truck airborne as well. The video then continues and shows a Toyota Fortuner doing the same; thankfully, the Fortuner driver had already slowed down. Lastly, a Mahindra Thar also flew off and was about to crash into another Thar on the road.
The above video was originally shared back in 2024, and it was shot in Gurgaon. This particular unmarked speed breaker was seen on the famous Golf Course Road, after the Centrum Plaza building opposite HR26 Dhaba. At the time, it was highlighted that the speed breaker was erected randomly and was not marked by the authorities who created it.
However, soon after this video went viral online, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) addressed this issue. They quickly installed warning signs and marked the speed breaker with reflective paint so that drivers could get alerted from afar and reduce their vehicle’s speed accordingly.

The biggest issue with unmarked speed breakers is that, as they cannot be seen from a distance, drivers driving at high speed bump into them with a lot of force, due to which the vehicles get severely damaged, as seen in the case of the BMW 5-Series in the video above. The suspension, underbody, and oil sump are the most prone to the damage caused by such unmarked speed breakers.
Additionally, such speed breakers can also cause tyre bursts, wheel misalignment, and cracked bumpers, which are unnecessary expenses that have to be borne by the owners. Apart from bigger vehicles, such speed breakers also cause a lot of damage to two-wheelers and their riders as well.
Another video from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, also went viral in which a lot of two-wheeler riders were seen losing their balance and falling off their vehicles after flying off a massive unmarked speed breaker. For two-wheeler riders, these unmarked speed breakers can cause serious head injuries, fractures, and even fatalities in worst-case scenarios.

A lot of speed breakers are made by local authorities and contractors who first make the speed breaker and then paint it a while later. This delay in the painting and marking is the time when such speed breakers cause a lot of damage to vehicles and their owners. This temporary delay by these local authorities and contractors becomes responsible for a lot of accidents.
It should become mandatory for authorities to mark each and every speed breaker immediately after it has been constructed. There should be proper markings with bright paint colors and reflective markers. Also, there should be warning signs 100–200 meters ahead to alert drivers. If these guidelines are followed, the number of accidents on speed breakers will reduce drastically.
