Car culture in India has changed significantly over the years. Today, several international brands offer their latest models in the Indian market. Mercedes-Benz cars are now a common sight on our roads, but there was a time when owning one was considered a major status symbol. This is probably why many royal families traditionally owned cars from the German luxury brand. It also explains why several members of royal families still have a soft corner for Mercedes-Benz.
We have now come across a social media post where the current heir of the princely state of Gondal, Gujarat, His Highness Maharajasaheb Himanshu Sinhji Saheb, is seen taking delivery of a brand-new Mercedes-AMG SL 55 convertible.
The images have been shared by Autohangar, a Mercedes-Benz dealership based in Mumbai, Maharashtra. In the photos, we see the young royal taking delivery of his brand-new two-door convertible coupe. This is not the first luxury car from Mercedes-Benz in Maharajasaheb Himanshu Sinhji Saheb’s garage.
Back in 2023, he had purchased a brand-new Mercedes-AMG G 63, and interestingly, that SUV was also finished in the same shade of blue as his newly acquired SL 55 AMG. It looks like blue is his favourite colour, which is probably why he opted for the same shade once again.
Coming to the Mercedes-AMG SL 55, it is finished in the Hyper Blue shade. This two-door, four-seater roadster is the seventh-generation SL model and replaces both the S-Class Cabriolet and the AMG GT Roadster. The SL 55 AMG gets the signature Panamericana front grille, sleek and angular headlamps with integrated dual-function LED DRLs, a raked windscreen, a long bonnet, quad exhaust tips, standard 20-inch alloy wheels with an option to upgrade to 21-inch wheels, and a retractable fabric roof. The roof can be operated at speeds of up to 60 km/h.
Like any modern Mercedes-Benz, the SL 55 AMG comes loaded with premium features such as an 11.9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch fully digital driver display, an AMG twin-spoke steering wheel, optional head-up display, Nappa leather upholstery, and a Burmester premium sound system. Mercedes-Benz also offers an extensive list of customisation options for buyers.
Powering the SL 55 AMG is a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 476 Bhp and 700 Nm of peak torque. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via the 4MATIC+ system. Rear-axle steering is offered as standard.
The SL 55 AMG can sprint from 0–100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 295 km/h. The price of a brand-new Mercedes-AMG SL 55 convertible in India is Rs 2.34 crore (ex-showroom).
The other Mercedes-Benz in Maharajasaheb Himanshu Sinhji Saheb’s collection, the G 63 AMG, is also an extremely popular SUV among the rich and famous. Mercedes-Benz is gradually moving towards electrification, and this could possibly be one of the last generations of the iconic G-Wagen in its pure ICE form. The price of the Mercedes-AMG G 63 starts at Rs 3.30 crore (ex-showroom).
