After the pandemic, people in India have started going out a lot more than before. We see them visiting the mountains and spending their vacations with family and friends. The number of people going on road trips has also gone up. Recently, a video from Himachal Police surfaced online in which a senior police official stopped a tourist and asked him to wear shoes while driving the car instead of slippers. Do you know the reason behind this? Let’s watch the video and find out.
The video has been shared by Himachal Police on their Instagram page. The officer stopped a tourist after spotting an outstation car. Upon stopping the vehicle, the officer realised that the driver was driving the car wearing slippers.
The officer immediately started educating the driver and began by asking where he was coming from. The tourist said that he was coming from Haryana, after which the officer continued to explain that he should not drive a car wearing slippers, as it is an offence.
It also falls under dangerous driving, and the driver should always wear shoes while driving. The officer explained that the terrain ahead would get tougher and the chances of the vehicle getting stuck would be high. In such a case, if the driver gets out of the vehicle wearing slippers, he might slip easily and injure himself. There is also a possibility that the driver’s feet might slip from the brake, accelerator, or clutch pedals while driving.
To avoid such mistakes, it is always a good idea to drive cars or ride two-wheelers wearing shoes. The officer said that he was not going to issue a fine this time, as he was using the opportunity to make the driver aware of the situation.
We can see the driver wearing shoes in the video itself. We have seen cops stopping two-wheeler riders who were using slippers in the past. This is probably the first time we have seen a car driver being stopped for the same reason. Many experienced cab drivers in the mountains drive vehicles wearing slippers (we do not recommend doing that).
The reason why two-wheeler riders are stopped from riding bikes while wearing chappals is due to the risk involved. If you are wearing chappals, the chances of the chappal or sandal interfering with the gear-shifting process are high. This could cause the rider to lose control and potentially lead to an accident. There is also a chance that the rider’s foot might slip from the footrest and accidentally apply the rear brake, causing a loss of control.
Another reason why wearing chappals while riding a two-wheeler is not allowed is that chappals or sandals do not offer any protection to the rider’s feet. In the event of an accident, the rider’s feet are often the first to come into contact with the road if they fall. If that happens, the feet remain completely unprotected, increasing the chances of severe injuries.
However, in the case of a car, this is less likely to happen, though the chances cannot be ruled out completely. If you are driving in snow, even a small mistake can make you lose control of your vehicle. Many people find wearing shoes while driving inconvenient, but for their own safety and the safety of other road users, we recommend doing so.
