Almost everyone who drives in India would agree with the fact that India is not for beginners. We have several examples available online that prove the same. In the past, we have reported multiple incidents involving unscientifically built speed breakers and how they do more harm than good on our roads. Here we have one such video of a newly built speed breaker in Mumbai where sedans are getting stuck.
The video has been shared by mirabhayanderkar on their Instagram page. In the video, we see some construction work going on in front of Shree Nidhi Hotel in Mumbai. The exact location is not mentioned in the video. It appears that as part of the construction, there is congestion on the road, and to add to the misery of commuters, the authorities decided to build a new speed breaker as well.
The design of the speed breaker is such that it is extremely difficult for vehicles to go over it. In the video, we see a Hyundai Verna sedan with occupants inside struggling to cross the speed breaker. As we know, the Verna is a sedan and does not offer much ground clearance.
The massive speed breaker has been constructed in a way that causes the Verna’s underbody to scrape against the tarmac. In fact, we even see the front wheels spinning after the underbody of the sedan almost gets beached. The driver manages to cross the breaker, but not without scraping the underbody.
After the Verna passes, we see a Maruti Brezza approaching the same speed breaker. The driver probably noticed the sedan struggling earlier, so he approaches the breaker diagonally. This allows him to cross it without much difficulty. Had he driven straight over the speed breaker, there was a high chance that the car would have scraped its underbody.
We also do not see any markings on the speed breaker. At night, this becomes extremely dangerous, as anyone unaware of the newly built breaker might drive over it without slowing down. Since this is a massive speed breaker, it is very easy for drivers to lose control and either crash into the median or veer into the nearby construction site.
This is not the first time we have come across such a video on the internet. Last month, we saw a video from Visakhapatnam where a newly built speed breaker was so poorly designed that even SUVs were getting stuck on it. Authorities had constructed two massive speed breakers next to each other, and vehicles like the Skoda Kushaq and Hyundai Venue were scraping and getting stuck, forcing occupants to step out of the car so the vehicle could clear the breaker.
Similarly, we have also seen videos from Gurugram where authorities constructed speed breakers overnight without proper markings. Vehicles passing through the road at speed were literally going airborne after hitting these breakers. Thankfully, due to social media attention, the authorities reworked those speed breakers and made them safer. We sincerely hope something similar happens in this case as well.
