Mahindra Thar SUVs have been in the news lately for multiple reasons. Recently, we came across a statement made by the Haryana DGP, where he said that people who own or drive Mahindra Thars and Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles are often rogue elements. While we do not completely agree with the statement, there are several examples available online that seem to prove otherwise. Here we have another video from the Delhi-NCR region, where a Mahindra Thar sank into a lake while a group was trying to go off-road.
The video doesn’t show the car falling into the lake, but we can see how other members of the group were trying to help the Thar owner bring his SUV out of the lake. The video was recorded near a lake close to Delhi. The group, known by the name Gang of Thars, was exploring trails in the Aravallis near Gurgaon last weekend.
The group was driving through a trail when one of the members spotted a small lake and decided to make things more adventurous by driving through it. This decision was something he soon regretted. The owner was completely unaware of the depth of the lake, and he drove right into it. Within minutes, the whole SUV sank into the lake.
While the SUV was sinking, the owner somehow managed to get out of the vehicle. We can hear him tell other members that he is thankful he escaped, and one of the group members even remarked that he was surprised how the owner managed to get out.

The SUV is completely underwater, and another Thar is being used to pull the submerged one out. The SUV is tied using a tow strap, and the owner of the submerged Thar is guiding the recovery vehicle. The owner asks the driver to pull the SUV out slowly, but huge rocks and boulders under the water are turning out to be a challenge in this recovery operation.
The roof of the Thar is visible in the video before it ends. The SUV is positioned in such a way that there isn’t enough room for the recovery vehicle to pull it out. The recovery vehicle has a waterbody on its right and in front.
If they had a vehicle equipped with an electric winch, things would have been slightly easier, as they wouldn’t have needed so much room to pull the SUV out.
This is not the first time we’ve seen someone get stuck or run into trouble while off-roading. It’s a good thing that the Thar owner was not alone. If he had been attempting this stunt by himself, he might have been stuck in the middle of nowhere for a very long time. Off-roading is a group activity, and one should always carry recovery equipment for safety.
Also, never drive into waterbodies if you are not familiar with the spot. The Thar owner could have easily avoided this mistake or accident if he had decided to walk up to the obstacle and check the depth before driving into it. And if you are unsure, it’s always a great idea to avoid such obstacles and look for alternate routes.
