Endeavour is a true-blue SUV from American car manufacturer Ford. It was offered in our market, and although Ford has left the Indian market, it still has a huge fan following. It is an extremely capable SUV both on and off the road. We have seen several videos in the past that prove this claim. However, there are instances when even a proper 4x4 SUV fails, and here we have one such video. In this video, a Ford Endeavour trying to cross a flooded road gets stuck in the middle, but a Tata Harrier.ev that was launched recently in the market wades through the same stretch like a boss.
The videos have been circulating on various social media platforms. We have seen several videos from the same location. It looks like the water level from a nearby lake or river has risen drastically, and a section of the road next to the lake is actually underwater. Many SUV or car owners have driven their vehicles through the stretch—some have cleared it, while others have got stuck.
In this case, the Ford Endeavour driver wanted to cross the waterlogged section. He drove the car into the submerged road and hit the water at high speed, hoping that he could push the water away. However, that was not the right technique. When the Endeavour driver entered the water at high speed, it made a splash, and that caused a problem.
The Endeavour seen in the video looks stock, and that is bad news in this case. If you watch the video carefully, you will realise that the water had gone over the bonnet for a few seconds. This is enough to get a vehicle stalled. Most modern cars have sensors, and when these sensors detect water or moisture in the engine, they automatically shut it off to prevent further damage. The engine gets hydro-locked, and getting it repaired is a time- and money-consuming process.
The water might have entered the engine through the stock air intake of the Endeavour. This would not have happened if the car had a snorkel. The SUV was now stuck in the middle of the waterlogged road. It was later recovered using trucks and taken to the service centre on a flatbed, as the car was not in a condition to be driven.
If the driver had slowly entered the water without making a huge splash, he might have been able to make it to the other side.
In the other video, we see a Tata Harrier.ev wading through water on the same section. The SUV owner enters the submerged road and calmly drives through it. The Tata Harrier.ev, without any drama, makes it to the other side. In fact, the Harrier.ev crosses the section like a boss. How could the Tata Harrier.ev do it and the Endeavour fail?
Well, the Harrier EV is an electric car. It is powered by an electric motor and a battery pack instead of an engine. So, it doesn’t have an air intake or an engine that breathes air to burn fuel. The electric motor and batteries are waterproof and will continue to work even when the car is submerged.
Driving on a flooded road is actually dangerous, as there is no way to know if the road has developed any new potholes or craters in which the car could get stuck or damaged. If that happens, it will leave you and your vehicle stranded in the middle of a flooded road, irrespective of whether it’s an ICE or an EV. Always look for alternate routes to avoid such situations.
