It is a known fact that we lack discipline on the roads. We are often impatient, and that restlessness frequently leads to accidents and inconvenience for other road users. We have now come across one such video that proves the same. A video from Jharkhand has been going viral on the internet where a train crashed into a truck carrying paddy that was trying to cross a railway level crossing while the train was approaching.
The video has been shared by r18 vlog on their Instagram page. In this video, we see traffic congestion on a narrow village road. The reason for the congestion was a railway level crossing. The incident happened at the Nawadih railway crossing.
Road users were waiting for the Gonda–Asansol Express to pass. The level crossing gate was open, and when the truck driver saw a gap, he tried to cross quickly to save time. However, he didn’t realise that this would turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes of his life. The truck driver moved the vehicle forward and, as he was about to cross, realised that he was stuck because of vehicles coming from the opposite direction.
There was no gap for the truck to move ahead. The driver’s cabin of the truck was clear of the tracks, but the rear portion was not. We can see the train approaching, and there were other vehicles on the right side of the truck as well, leaving no space to manoeuvre.
The driver didn’t have enough time to even reverse the truck. We assume that the loco pilot of the train spotted the obstacle but, as it was a train, it took time to slow down and stop. The train did slow down, but the loco pilot couldn’t avoid the crash. The train hit the rear of the truck, nearly toppling it. The truck was pushed along with the train for a few metres before both came to a halt.
As per reports circulating online, two bikers who were caught between the truck and the train suffered injuries. No casualties have been reported in this case. However, this is a serious issue. Railway authorities have told the media that a probe has been initiated to find the exact reason behind the crash.
According to reports, the Gonda–Asansol Express entered the down line in the absence of a proper signal. If you look carefully, the railway crossing does have a barrier, but it was raised at the time of the incident. The gates were not closed, which could be one reason why the truck driver attempted to cross. As seen in the video, heavy traffic could have been another contributing factor.
It is also possible that the gatekeeper intentionally kept the gates open to allow the truck to cross the track safely. Whatever the reason may have been, this incident is a serious concern. If the truck driver had waited a little longer, the crash could have been avoided. Thankfully, the train slowed down in time. If it had hit the truck at high speed, this incident could have turned into a major disaster.
