In India, the used car market has grown over the years. Buying a car is still a big dream for many people in the country, and in the used car market, people often find their dream cars at affordable prices. However, as a person who is planning to sell his existing vehicle to buy a new one, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. Here we have a video where a Motor Vehicle Department officer explains why it is important to get the ownership transferred while selling your vehicle.
The video has been shared by MVD Kerala on their official YouTube channel. In this video, the officer explains the importance of changing the ownership of your vehicle once you sell it. In India, people sell vehicles in multiple ways. Some sell their vehicles to people they know, like friends or family. Others post ads about the vehicle on social media and car-selling platforms. Many also go to used car dealers and sell their cars directly to them.
In many cases, even after selling the vehicle, the buyer does not change the ownership of the car. The owner of the car often forgets about this detail, assuming that the person who bought the vehicle will get it transferred under their name. However, that doesn’t happen all the time, and there are instances where the old owner of the vehicle realizes this only when they receive a message about a traffic offence linked to their registered number.

Many people feel that their responsibility is over once they sell the vehicle to someone. However, this is not the right attitude. If the vehicle gets involved in an accident or the new owner violates a traffic rule, the registered owner of the vehicle will be held responsible.
The officer in this video explains that if you have sold the vehicle to someone you personally know, you can always approach them and get the ownership transferred. However, this is not the case with other selling methods. In some cases, the actual owner does not even know the details of the person who bought the vehicle.
To avoid such situations, the officer suggests that the person selling the vehicle can initiate the ownership transfer via government websites. If you are selling the vehicle to a used car dealer, ensure that they have an authorization certificate from the government. Also, make sure that the dealer has Form 29B and Form 29C, so you can sell the vehicle with peace of mind.
Form 29C temporarily transfers the ownership of your vehicle to the dealer. This means that if the vehicle gets into any trouble, you, as the person who sold the vehicle, won’t be held responsible. The government has made most of these processes online, and if you want to change the ownership of your vehicle, you can do it easily without any hassle, and that too without even visiting the RTO.
