In the recent past, we have seen multiple patent filings from China’s Chery Automobile. In the latest occurrence, the Tiggo 7L SUV has been patented in India. This is the larger, more premium derivative of the Tiggo 7, launched in China on April 8, 2026. The patent filing happens just days after the China launch. If JSW Motors brings it to India, the Tiggo 7L will compete primarily with the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and the upcoming MG Starlight 560. That said, a patent filing doesn’t guarantee an imminent launch. It could simply be an IP protection exercise as well.

In China, the Tiggo 7L has an introductory starting price of CNY 78,900 (roughly Rs 10.77 lakh). The range-topping variant comes at CNY 99,900 (Rs 13.64 lakh). Chery has given the vehicle a clear positioning in the lineup- bigger, better and pricier than the regular Tiggo 7. It appeals to buyers looking for more space and features from their Tiggo 7s.
The filing shows 10/11/2025 as the date of registration. The design shown in the filing documents appear to be the same as that of the 7L sold in China.

The Chery Tiggo 7L has an interesting design. The front fascia is different from that of the standard Tiggo 7. Key design highlights include a large spindle-like V-shaped grille, semi-flush door handles, large wheels, prominent triangular elements in the bumper, and connected LED tail lamps.
You’ll find the silhouette to be slightly more dynamic than that of the standard SUV. The company calls this the ‘Cloud Shadow’ design and the SUV rides on 19-inch wheels (regular Tiggo 7 has 18-inch wheels).

The 7L measures 4,655 mm in length and has a wheelbase of 2,720 mm. For perspective, the XUV 7XO has a wheelbase of 2750mm and is 4,695 mm long. The Mahindra will thus be slightly larger than the Tiggo 7L.
The Tiggo 7L is tech-laden. It gets a 15.6-inch central display and a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, support for Apple Carplay, Huawei HiCar, and Carlink, Level 2 ADAS, panoramic sunroof and more. The in-car systems are powered by the Snapdragon 8155 chipset. It also comes with seven airbags and several other safety features.

The Tiggo 7L offers two powertrain choices in China- a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine making 154hp and a 197hp 1.6L turbo-petrol engine. The latter comes with a dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Another Chery model that has already been patented in India is the Tiggo 8. This filing dates back to September 2025. The Tiggo 8 is one of the hot-selling Chery models worldwide. This three-row SUV measures over 4.7 metres in length.
Two versions of it are available in international markets- Pro and Plus. It comes in five, six and seven seater options and with petrol and hybrid powertrain options. The Tiggo 8 has an interesting design comprising a bold grille, split headlamps, and a bold front bumper.
The Tiggo 8 comes with features like a panoramic sunroof, level 2 ADAS, a 15.6-inch touchscreen, 12-speaker sound system, digital instrument cluster, 540-degree camera, 50W wireless charging bay, ambient lighting, built-in dash cam, ventilated seats and more.
This SUV is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that makes 241hp and 390 Nm. It comes mated to a 7-speed DCT. The Chinese version also gets All Wheel Drive technology. If launched in India, the Tiggo 8 is likely to sit in the Rs 25-30 lakh range with its ex-showroom prices. Here again, a patent filling doesn’t guarantee an imminent launch!
