India’s diesel car market has been fast evolving in the recent past. Sales numbers from financial year 2026 (FY2026) reveal that diesel cars are far from dead. Diesel engines are evolving into a focused, high-value segment driven primarily by SUVs and other utility vehicles. One out of two diesel cars sold in India in FY26 was from the same manufacturer- Mahindra. When we look at the top 10 rankings, five were Mahindra models.
8,63,277 diesel cars were sold in India in FY26. Mahindra took five of top six positions with the Scorpio, Bolero, Thar Roxx, XUV700, and Thar. India’s diesel car market has become highly concentrated, with the top 10 best-selling models accounting for a significant share of the total sales. Mahindra enjoys a market share of 57.1% in the diesel segment.

In FY2026, Mahindra Scorpio emerged as India’s best-selling diesel car, posting sales of 1,70,372 units. That’s approximately 19.7 percent of total diesel car sales. In other words, one out of every five diesel SUVs sold in India during the period was a Scorpio!
The Scorpio family now has two models- the Scorpio Classic and the bigger, better-kitted Scorpjo-N. The Scorpio Classic enjoys great acceptance in semi urban and rural India while the other one is loved for its comfortable cabin and modern appeal. Mahindra is known to be working on facelifts to both these models. When these launch later this year, the numbers are likely to go further up.

The Mahindra Bolero follows in second place with 1,10,136 units sold during the period- a contribution of 12.8%. The Bolero family now has three models- Bolero Classic, Bolero NEO, and Bolero NEO Plus. The Bolero family, especially the Classic, is loved for its practical nature, durability, low maintenance and high resale value. Limited ride comfort on highways and cramped seating are some of its disadvantages. The Bolero family is particularly popular in rural and semi-urban markets.

Hyundai Creta takes third place and posted sales of 91,907 units during the period. It has essentially become the most successful monocoque diesel SUV in this list, and sold significantly more numbers than its Kia-badged sibling- the Seltos. It features a 1.5L U2 turbocharged diesel engine, available with manual and automatic transmissions. This engine is loved for its frugal nature, refinement and reliability. The Creta remains popular in urban and semi-urban India and offers great ride quality.

The Mahindra Thar ROXX sold 72,336 units and took the fourth place with 8.4% representation. This lifestyle-oriented diesel SUV was first launched in August 2024 and quickly gained traction in the Indian market. It is essentially the five-door version of the Mahindra Thar and comes with the same 2.2L mHawk diesel engine.

At the fifth position is another Mahindra- the XUV700 that uses the same 2.2L mHawk engine. It sold 44,546 units (5.2% contribution). This monocoque SUV is known for its ride quality and dynamics. Early this year, Mahindra launched a facelift on this model, effectively renaming it to XUV 7XO. Ride quality, strong performance, tech-heavy cabin and great dynamics continue to be the biggest talking points of the new model.

The three-door Thar followed closely, with 43,030 units sold during the period, translating to a market share of 5%. Families mostly prefer the Thar ROXX over the three-door Thar, due to its added comfort, increased convenience, larger dimensions and technology-rich cabin. The three-door, however, has its charm and serves those looking for a more utilitarian, hardcore, trail-ready Thar.

At the seventh spot is the Toyota Innova Crysta that sold 37,090 units, translating to a market share of 4.3 percent. The Crysta continues to be in great demand in both private and fleet segments and is powered by a 2.4-litre 2GD-FTV diesel engine. It impresses with its ride quality and cabin experience.

The Toyota Fortuner, which continues to be the undisputed king in its segment, sold 34,157 units and enjoyed a market share of 4%. It is powered by a 2.8L diesel engine, known for its reliability and durability. People also love the Fortuner for its off-roading capabilities and strong resale value. Interestingly, the ride can get bouncy at times. Another major disadvantage is that despite being priced steeply, the Fortuner is not a feature-packed SUV.

Kia Seltos takes the ninth place in this list, selling 31,784 units during the financial year. It is powered by the same 1.5L diesel engine as the Creta. People love its frugal and reliable nature. The downside, however, is the stiff ride of the previous generation. The second-generation Seltos that launched early this year has addressed this to a great extent.

At the 10th position is the Kia Sonet, which is powered by the same 1.5L diesel engine. It sold 30,858 units during the period. The compact proportions, stylish design, comfortable, technology-rich cabin and fuel efficient powertrain are the things that attract people to this B-segment SUV.
