Tata Motors recently became the second best-selling car brand in India after it overtook Hyundai Motor India Limited and Mahindra Automotive. Now, what's even more interesting is that this success of Tata Motors can be accredited to two SUVs, which are its best sellers. Both of these SUVs make up 60 percent of total Tata sales.

In April 2026, Tata Motors sold a total of 59,000 passenger vehicles in India, when compared to the same month last year, when it sold 45,199 units. It has managed to achieve an impressive 31 percent Year-on-Year growth. However, on a Month-on-Month basis, sales have declined by 11 percent compared to the 66,192 units sold in March 2026.
Coming to the interesting part of the Tata Motors sales breakup, it has been reported that out of every 10 Tata cars sold in India last month, more than 6 were Punch and Nexon. Together, these two SUVs contributed over 63 percent of the entire monthly sales volume of Tata Motors.

The Tata Punch has managed to remain the best-selling Tata car in India during April 2026. The company sold a massive 19,107 units of this micro SUV during April. When compared to April 2025, Punch has managed to register an outstanding 53 percent Year-on-Year growth. Now, even though its sales were down by 9 percent compared to March 2026, the Punch is still the highest-selling product in Tata Motors' lineup.
The second best-selling Tata model in the month of April was the Nexon. Tata Motors managed to sell 18,126 units of the Nexon last month. This sub-compact SUV has registered a growth of 17 percent on a Year-on-Year basis. However, like the Punch, sales of the Nexon have also declined by 9 percent when compared to March 2026. In total, Punch and Nexon accounted for 37,233 units out of Tata’s total 59,000 units sold in April.

One of the biggest reasons behind the popularity of Punch and Nexon is their positioning and offering of features with safety. Today, customers in India want vehicles which offer SUV styling, premium features, strong safety, and are also affordable. And with these two SUVs, Tata has managed to successfully crack this formula.
If we talk about the Punch individually, it has become extremely popular because it offers SUV-like styling and high ground clearance at hatchback pricing. Buyers get the commanding driving position and rugged road presence of an SUV, and they do not have to spend too much money. This has made it extremely popular among first-time car buyers and customers in bigger cities.

The Nexon, on the other hand, is known for its features and safety. It offers a ton of features, including a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument gauge cluster, automatic climate control, panoramic sunroof, and others. Also, being a 5-star safety-rated vehicle has added to its popularity.
Another major reason behind its success is the offering of multiple powertrain options. This SUV is offered with petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric powertrain options. This means there is a Nexon for almost every type of buyer. Additionally, Tata Motors regularly updates its products, which has helped in maintaining customer interest.

Apart from the Punch and Nexon, the newly launched Tata Sierra has shown strong sales. Tata sold 7,316 units of the Sierra in April 2026. The Tata Tiago had total sales of 5,488 units in April 2026, which was down 34 percent Year-on-Year and 23 percent Month-on-Month.
Additionally, the Tigor sedan sold only 962 units and recorded a 26 percent Year-on-Year decline. The Tata Harrier, on the other hand, has come out as one of the strongest performers in Tata’s lineup. The SUV sold 2,545 units in April 2026 and registered a massive 151 percent Year-on-Year growth. The Safari has also performed steadily with 1,467 units and 9 percent Year-on-Year growth.

The coupe SUV Curvv, however, has continued to struggle. Tata sold only 1,403 units of the Curvv, which was down 55 percent Year-on-Year and 12 percent Month-on-Month. Lastly, the Altroz premium hatchback has performed decently with 2,586 units and registered 19 percent Year-on-Year growth.

Tata Motors is currently the largest EV automaker in India, and the company is currently working on four major electric vehicle launches. These new models will help in increasing its sales. One of the biggest upcoming launches will be the Tata Sierra.ev. The electric SUV is expected to arrive with 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery pack options similar to the Harrier EV.
Tata is also preparing the Safari.ev, which will become the brand’s first-ever three-row electric SUV. The SUV is expected to launch around the festive season this year and could offer both Rear-Wheel Drive and AWD configurations. Apart from these flagship SUVs, Tata is also working on the facelifted Tiago.ev. The updated hatchback is expected to get a larger 30 kWh battery pack with a claimed range of around 366 km.

It will also get more power, updated styling, and new features. Lastly, Tata is also preparing for the launch of its premium electric SUV, the Avinya X EV, which will sit at the top of Tata’s electric lineup. This luxury EV will be based on Tata’s new EMA platform. It is expected to offer ultra-fast charging capability along with a futuristic design and premium cabin experience.
