Volkswagen has officially entered the premium three row SUV segment with the launch of the all-new Tayron R Line. The locally assembled flagship model has received a positive initial response from the market, recording 113 wholesale dispatches to dealerships across the country in its first month of availability. The latest wholesale figures for February 2026 show that the brand dispatched a total of 835 utility vehicles, meaning the new Tayron already accounts for a solid 13 percent share of the entire utility vehicle portfolio for the manufacturer.

The Tayron R Line was launched at a competitive price tag of Rs 46.99 lakh ex showroom. The company has made a deliberate choice to offer the vehicle in a single, fully loaded R Line trim level, avoiding complex variant lineups. This pricing strategy places it at a premium of Rs 1.26 lakh over the smaller Tiguan R Line. Interested customers can currently secure a booking through authorized dealerships or the official brand website for a token amount of Rs 51,000.
To keep the acquisition cost realistic in a highly price sensitive market, Volkswagen is bringing the Tayron to the country as a Completely Knocked Down unit. Local assembly allows the automaker to avoid the massive import duties levied on fully built up vehicles. This strategy is crucial for competing against established ladder frame giants like the Toyota Fortuner, as well as premium unibody rivals such as the Skoda Kodiaq, the Jeep Meridian, and the newly introduced MG Majestor.

The three row configuration of the Tayron directly targets buyers who want the driving dynamics and build quality of a premium German vehicle, but require more passenger space than a standard midsize five-seater can offer. The exterior styling features a muscular silhouette, prominent wheel arches, and illuminated light signatures that align perfectly with the modern global design language of the brand.
Under the hood, the Tayron R Line relies entirely on proven combustion engine technology. The SUV is powered by a potent 2.0 litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine. This four cylinder unit produces a healthy maximum power output of 201 bhp and delivers 320 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated exclusively to a fast shifting seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission that sends power to the wheels.
Despite its large footprint and heavy three row architecture, the turbocharged powertrain ensures that the Tayron remains genuinely quick. Volkswagen claims the new flagship SUV can accelerate from a standstill to 100 kilometres per hour in an impressive 7.3 seconds. This acceleration figure makes it one of the quickest vehicles in its specific segment. The brand does not offer a diesel engine option, entirely banking on the refinement and punchy power delivery of the TSI motor to attract driving enthusiasts.
The arrival of the Tayron R Line represents a critical expansion for Volkswagen in the domestic premium space. While models like the Taigun midsize SUV and Virtus sedan continue to drive mainstream volume, the new flagship serves as a halo product to elevate the overall brand image. By offering luxury features, ample cabin space, and strong performance in a highly practical seven seat layout, the manufacturer aims to capture a wealthy demographic looking for a sophisticated family vehicle. The initial dispatch of 113 units in a short month like February indicates a steady start for a vehicle approaching the half crore price mark.
